Oops! We did it again.
That's right, each year we say that we are never going to go back and before you know it, we are walking through the doors and wondering how we ended up there.
As mentioned the other day, I took tons of photos. I'm learning how to take photos and then delete the ones that I don't care for or don't mean anything at all. That's difficult for me because for one thing, most of the pictures are of my kids and every time I hit "delete", I have a "Sofie's Choice" moment. Minus the Nazis.Fred and I were set not to go at all until both John and Claire read that the Show was on. Damn those billboards! They bugged us and we gave in. But we were determined to make the best of it. So we loaded the kids into the mini-van and off we went. It's so close that the car doesn't even have time to warm up. We leave the bulky jackets in the car and then jump onto the shuttle from the parking lot.
We arrived at 10a.m. and this was the crowd coming in. It's not too bad. By Noon, you could not see any of the floor. This is one of the reasons that Fred and I don't care for it. The crowd is overwhelming and keeping track of the little ones makes it very difficult to maneuver through the building.
But no time to stop and smell the roses. It was off to see the animals.
I wonder if I could find a job just just taking pictures of chickens? I'm getting quite good at it.
Don't you love this picture? He sensed that I was watching him and woke up. I asked him if I could take a picture of him and his pig. He said "Okay", very sweetly. Wasn't that nice of him? Here's another little boy with his lamb. I haven't worn Wrangler jeans since I was probably his age. But if I did wear them, you can bet your sweet bippy that I would wear some cool cowboy boots like his.
And look at this cow giving me the eye.
And while the kids were looking at the animals, I was checking out some other livestock.
"Giddy-up!"
I must say that I was totally impressed with people's manners this year. This place is not the place you want to go to if you expect politeness. It must be the crowds and everyone falling all over each other that makes them rude. However, this year, when I tripped over someone(a billion times) and apologized, they came back with responses like, "oh, that's okay", "no problem" or actually, "it's my fault, sorry." I loved it! We all acted like grown-ups.
But one thing that I did notice a lot and which really disturbed me was the amount of parents texting while their kids were everywhere. I actually brought this kid back to his dad right after this next photo was taken.
His dad thanked me but I noticed that he went right back to texting. Perhaps I'm just jealous because I don't text. I don't know. No, I do know. I don't like it for so many other reasons.
And then for the contests! This "lovely" ensemble won Best In Show.
Can you imagine what outfit lost? I wonder what Tim Gunn would say? Although Michael Coors would probably love it. And don't even get me started on Nina Garcia. Then on to the food judging. Who doesn't love jarred fruit?
Speaking of Fruits, here are a few more.
And of course we had to shop. I mean, Christmas was so last month. My poor children went 15 days without something new. I feel so bad for them sometimes. How they suffer.
And now something to eat.
Jacob swallowing a hot dog whole.
Here's a wheel. I just thought that it was cool looking.
Fred accused me of being like the Texters and ignoring the kids just to take pictures. That's only mostly true. There were times that I was actually paying attention to them. Look, if they don't know to stay with me by now, that's their own fault. Just kidding, people. Relax! And look, I actually got a picture of me with two of the boys.
Although Claire took it as me ignoring her.
So I had to give her a cuddle.
And she felt much better.
The Farm Show is way more than animals in stalls. It has rodeos and square dancing and tons of contests. We don't stick around for that because of the crowds. Maybe when the kids get older.
Fred insists on finding a hotel with a pool next year to go to during the Farm Show. I won't argue with him.
Your Friend, m.
Oh, also! Thank you for your input on my Blog switching question. I'm still not sure yet but your comments were very helpful. m.

Great shots (as always)! I don't like texting, either. I don't own a portable phone. They may kick me out of the country for that, I don't know. But I think I drink enough wine to be holding up my end of the economic bargain.
Why no photos of Phred, er, Fred?
Oh, wait. Was that "Giddy-up" him? I can't tell...
Great pics, once again! My little boy loves cows, so the pics of cows went over really big here in our house! That looked like a fun day.
We were there yesterday at 900 am and it was very nice and not crowded. By 1:00 when we left we could not see the floor either. It is too much fun not to go, especially with the kids. Too bad we could not go together, you can I can take photos and Fred and Lori can wrangle children.
@wcsNo, that was just a cowboy tending to his bull. I've said before that Fred is like the Amish, I can only get pictures of him working. m.
Ohh I love a good farm show. Where's my belt buckle!
I hate texting too, people forget to interact with those right in front of them.
Thanks! I needed a Heifer Fix today.
Again, wonderful pictures.
P.S.
We have the same taste, I approve of the "other livestock." Yum.
I love the farm show! Isn't it always supposed to snow during Farm Show week, though? Did you go watch the Border Collies? That's my favorite part...
I think it looks like a lot of fun, this farm show thing!
Oh, I feel left out, we don't have shows like that anymore. The EU stopped things like that because of cattle diseases that could spread.
Like the first photo, Fred dressed up as a black sheep, sorry bull. ;}
I love the photo's! I think you could frame them and sell them, especially the chicken. :)
This looks like a lot of fun, but I would hate the crowds as well.
I hear there is a big calling in professional chicken photography.
Giddy Up!
I usually only text to my kids, so that is ok. Right?
the pix are great-i love the ones with the kids in the fruit, especially the grapes, that cracked me up-what did you do to upset my little girl, she'll tell me later, then you'll be in trouble-lol luv ya Mom
Mark,
I live in a city that takes great pride in having the world's largest Livestock Show and Rodeo. For better or worst we live in Texas! I have always refused to attend this mega event because of the animal cruelty issues. I may need to rethink my stance on this because of your cowboy photo.
I also do not understand the fascination with texting. Jose and I have text block on our phones. Texting makes me crazy!!! I guess we are just old school.
Best regards,
Brandon
Nuthin; like gays at a farm show!
Fabulous pics and what a great description of your day! I love how your photos and text together make me feel like I'm there too. Whatever you do or don't do with your blog, you have that ability to bring us along with you and it's such fun.
You are very adorable. And funny. And your children are BEAUTIFUL.
Moo!
@Peter, I don't know about Holland, but in Belgium we still have farm shows. So it's certainly not a EU ban. The most famous one is the 'Foire de Libramont' in the Ardennes. It takes place every year in July. Here's a link to the website, with photos of previous editions: http://www.foiredelibramont.com/#
Great pics Mark, I love the horned cattle, we remove the horns from our calves for safely but they do look nice.
I also love the shot of your girl feeling ignored, its the nape of the neck and all those curls.
You are both such good Dads.
My little boy lamb will go to market with his manhood unaltered!
apparently deep friend anything and everything is a 'must' at state fairs !
Friend of Sardine Mama here -
Loved the pictures. I am a PA transplant here in San Antonio, and sometimes I just miss home, you know?
I guess you got your obligatory snow during farm show. And I know what you mean about the crowds, but it is always fun to take the kids.
Thanks for a little nostalgia this morning.
We went every year when we were younger. I LOVED it! Getting up at 4:30 am was the best thing ever! This year my Daddy took Kaishon and my sister and her 2 boys. They had so much fun yesterday. My Dad is a real farmer and he is sad about how much the farm show has changed since he was a little boy. He does not like the selling at all.
Laughed out loud about your kids needing a present :)
Great pictures. And I'm so glad everyone was acting like a grown-up. How can we turn this into a world wide movement?
RE:The Best in Show Outfit....actually Michael Kors would say something like this about that rag on a model, "She looks like a transvestite flamenco dancer at a funeral."
Love me some Micheal Kors-isms!
Wonderful photographs. Keep sharing.
